HowMuchGravel.co.uk is a free gravel calculator built and maintained by the team at Stones4Gardens Ltd. We created this tool because we saw homeowners and landscapers consistently ordering the wrong amount of gravel — either too much (wasting money) or too little (requiring expensive second deliveries). Our calculator uses the same density figures and coverage calculations we use internally when advising our own customers.

Why This Calculator Exists
Most online gravel calculators use a single average density for all stone types. The reality is that densities vary significantly — from 1,500 kg/m³ for decorative slate to 2,000 kg/m³ for MOT Type 1 sub-base. Getting this wrong means ordering 25–30% too much or too little. Our calculator accounts for these differences, and our recommended depths are based on British Standards and real-world experience across thousands of orders.
How We Keep This Accurate
We review and update this site regularly to reflect current UK pricing, regulations, and best practices. The depth recommendations follow Department for Transport specifications (Clause 803 for sub-base) and industry guidance from the British Standards Institute (BS 7533 series for modular pavements).
