How to Calculate Gravel by Hand

Our calculator does this instantly, but here's the maths if you want to double-check or work it out on paper.

The Formula

  1. 1

    Calculate area

    Length (m) × Width (m) = Area (m²)

  2. 2

    Convert depth to metres

    Depth (cm) ÷ 100 = Depth (m)

  3. 3

    Calculate volume

Area (m²) × Depth (m) = Volume (m³)

  4. 4

    Calculate weight

Volume (m³) × Density (kg/m³) = Weight (kg)

Common densities

  • Gravel / Slate Gravel1,500 kg/m³
  • Pebbles / Cobbles1,800 kg/m³
  • MOT Type 1 (sub-base)2,000 kg/m³

Worked Example

A typical UK driveway: 5 m long × 3 m wide, filled to 5 cm depthwith standard gravel (1,500 kg/m³).

Area5 × 3 = 15 m²
Depth in metres5 ÷ 100 = 0.05 m
Volume15 × 0.05 = 0.75 m³
Weight0.75 × 1,500 = 1,125 kg

You would need

1.13 tonnes

≈ 57 × 20 kg bags  or  2 × 500 kg bulk bags

For irregular shapes, split the area into rectangles and add the results. Our multi-area calculator handles this automatically.

Gravel Density Reference

Density determines how much a given volume of gravel weighs. Use the table below to find the right value for your material, or let our calculator handle it automatically.

Coverage at a Glance

How much area does one tonne of gravel cover? It depends on the depth. This table gives quick estimates based on an average density of 1,500 kg/m³.

DepthCoverage per Tonne (approx.)
30mm~22 m²
40mm~17 m²
50mm~13 m²
60mm~11 m²
75mm~9 m²
100mm~7 m²

Based on average gravel density of 1,500 kg/m³. Heavier materials (e.g. granite at 1,600 kg/m³) cover slightly less area per tonne.

Why Choose Gravel?

No Planning Permission

Gravel is permeable, so no planning permission needed under UK rules (unlike tarmac or concrete over 5m²). With SuDS regulations tightening since January 2025, permeable surfaces like gravel are increasingly the smart choice.

Lowest Carbon Footprint

Gravel produces roughly 0.005–0.01 kg CO₂ per kg of material, compared to 0.4–0.5 for concrete and 0.48 for tarmac. It's the most environmentally friendly driveway and garden surface option.

Year-Round Savings

Buy in autumn/winter for 10–15% savings. Proximity to UK quarry regions (Derbyshire, Somerset, Leicestershire) means even lower transport costs. Delivery is often the biggest hidden cost — order in bulk to reduce per-tonne delivery charges.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much gravel do I need for a driveway?
For a standard UK driveway (e.g. 5m x 3m), you need approximately 1,125kg of gravel at 50mm depth. That's roughly one 1000kg order plus a smaller top-up. Use our calculator above for an exact figure based on your measurements.
How deep should gravel be?
For driveways, gravel should be at least 50mm (5cm) deep. Garden paths need 30mm minimum, and decorative areas around 40mm. Going too shallow means the base will show through quickly.
How do I calculate how much gravel I need?
Multiply length x width x depth (all in metres) to get volume in cubic metres. Then multiply by the gravel density (typically 1,500 kg/m³) to get the weight in kg. Our calculator does this automatically.
How many bags of gravel do I need?
Divide the total weight (in kg) by the bag weight. For example, if you need 600kg of gravel, that's 30 bags of 20kg. Ordering larger quantities (500kg or 1000kg) is more economical for bigger projects.
What is the cheapest way to buy gravel in the UK?
Larger quantities (500kg or 1000kg) are significantly cheaper per kg than individual 10–20kg bags. Use our cost calculator to compare prices across different order sizes.
Do I need a weed membrane under gravel?
Yes, we always recommend laying a weed membrane before adding gravel. It prevents weed growth, stops the gravel sinking into the soil, and helps maintain an even surface over time.
What type of gravel is best for driveways?
Angular gravel locks together and stays in place under vehicle traffic. Slate gravel in the 30–50mm range is a popular choice for its durability and appearance. Avoid smooth pebbles on driveways as they roll and shift.
How much does gravel cost in the UK?
Gravel prices vary by type and quantity. Buying in larger amounts (500kg–1000kg) is significantly cheaper per kg than small bags. Check Stones4Gardens for current pricing on slate gravel and polished pebbles, with delivery across the UK.
Do I need planning permission for a gravel driveway?
No. Gravel is permeable, so under UK permitted development rules (since October 2008), you don’t need planning permission regardless of area size. Impermeable surfaces over 5m² DO need permission. This is one of gravel’s biggest advantages over tarmac or concrete. Exceptions apply for listed buildings and conservation areas.
When is the best time to buy gravel in the UK?
October to February offers the best prices — typically 10–15% cheaper than spring/summer peak season. The landscaping rush starts in March and suppliers get busy, with delivery times stretching from 2–3 days to 1–2 weeks. Order materials in late winter for spring installation to get both good prices and reliable delivery.
Do I need a sub-base under gravel?
For driveways, absolutely — a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base of at least 150mm is essential. Without it, gravel sinks into the ground within months. For garden paths and decorative areas on firm ground, you can often get away with just a weed membrane, but a thin sub-base (75–100mm) still improves longevity. Always compact the sub-base in layers before adding surface gravel.
